President’s Letter

Welcome to the Washington Alpha chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon!

From the surface, people think of college as a place of to get a degree and move on. People focus on college rankings, but neglect the details that make college what it is, the community. Sigma Alpha Epsilon has been fostering community and brotherhood at the University of Washington since 1906. Walking around the house, you find yourself surrounded by brothers that encourage you, challenge you, and help you succeed in all facets of life. Brothers of SAE are True Gentlemen living each day to its fullest.

My name is Jake Broemeling, I’m the current president here at Sigma Alpha Epsilon. I’m a junior from Spokane, WA studying International Studies. When I first joined the house two years ago, not only did I find SAE to be a place of opportunity; I found brothers that study together, spend time together, and engage their community together. Not only are we involved in the community, we believe that we have an academic responsibility to ourselves, our families, and to the organization. We work hard each semester to provide the best support network we can to challenge each other to succeed. This past quarter, our brothers achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.41, higher than the all men’s average at UW. Our members are looking toward the future, aspiring to be the next businessmen, engineers, healthcare professionals, and leaders of the modern world.

Community service and philanthropy are an important part of our fraternity life. We are constantly looking for new ways to support the community. Our main focus is supporting Seattle Children’s Hospital, raising hundreds of dollars for them annually. We host numerous events throughout the year that benefit our philanthropy, including our haunted house event, Paddy Murphy Week, and Feed the Lions Philanthropy. We also spend time cleaning the community, participating in community fundraisers, and give our time to those less fortunate. Many of our service projects can be found on the SAE Instagram @UWSAE.

The COVID-19 crisis has created new challenges for us, but I am seeing brothers rising to the occasion each and every day. We are taking precautions to be the most prepared community going forward, implementing distancing within our living spaces, individually packed meals, and virtual events for brotherhood activities. We are also recruiting virtually for the time being.

Whether youre a student, parent, or are simply interested in SAE, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I would love to get to know you and answer any questions you may have.
